Comanche ROV Used by U.S. Army
Houston, TX – October 10, 2011 – The U.S. Army recently deployed a remotely operated underwater munitions recovery system (ROUMRS) over Ordnance Reef, an area off the Waianae Coast of Oahu. ™ Comanche Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to recover and destroy explosives in an area that was used as a disposal site for military munitions after World War II.
The Comanche ROV used a seven thruster propulsion system specifically developed to provide high thrust lifting capability and was equipped with other specialized equipment to address the unique technical complexities of the operation.
Previously, the Army used divers to clear underwater munitions. The use of an ROV to perform this work was the first of its kind and was a combined effort of ARA Inc. and Oceaneering International Inc. working for the U.S. Army, as well as with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Hawaii’s Department of Oceanography
